Evanston, Illinois is a suburban city in Cook County on the shores of Lake Michigan, about 12–13 miles north of downtown Chicago, with a population of roughly 75,000–78,000 people. It’s home to Northwestern University, the global headquarters of Rotary International, diverse neighborhoods, beaches, parks, cultural institutions, and a mix of historic and modern architecture.
Historically, the community was first established in the mid-1800s and grew rapidly after the Civil War, becoming known for its Victorian and early-20th-century homes and as an independent city distinct from Chicago. Northwestern opened before the city was formally incorporated, and much of the city’s growth and culture has been shaped by the university ever since.
